Mlakve Stadium

Importance of the locality:

From the start of June until the end of August 1992, at least 700 men, Bosnian Muslims from Bosanski Novi, some of whom were elderly, were detained at the Mlakve Stadim; some of the detainees had been transferred from the Omarska, Trnopolje and Keraterm camps. Units of the Army of Republika Srpska had control over the facilities. The prisoners were beaten and humiliated, food and water was withheld and they did not receive medical aid.

For crimes committed at this site, the wartime president of Republika Srpska Radovan Karadžić was convicted under the doctrine of command responsibility, and sentenced to life in prison for the torture, beatings, physical and psychological abuse, cruel and inhumane treatment of prisoners at the Mlakve Stadium: the establishment and perpetuation of inhumane living conditions in the Mlakve football stadium, including the failure to provide adequate accommodation, shelter, food, water, medical care, or hygienic sanitation facilities, as cruel or inhumane treatment; forcible transfer or deportation of Bosnian Muslims and Bosnian Croats from their homes; and unlawful detention in the Mlakve football stadium.
